 My Bio

I offer tutoring in English (Language and Literature) up to and including GCSE level (KS4). English was always a great school subject for me, and literature and writing are two pastimes from then that has stayed strong throughout the years. Though my BA is in History, the degree requires great command of essay writing skills (including range of vocabulary, correct SPaG, varied sentence lengths, general style etc.). Many modules I have undertaken also involved literature, analysing historical texts to discover possible hidden (or even subconscious!) intentions of the author, or what it might suggest about the society and time the author lived in. During my university studies I have discovered the poetry of Baudelaire, the novels of Elizabeth Gaskell, and the folk stories of Tokugawa Japan amongst others. In this way, I am more prepared to help English students with the areas they find challenging than ever.

Whether it’s as exam prep, or for being able to write essays for class, or helping with reading or grammar, I would love to help with interactive and engaging lessons. I have experience in tutoring for both GCSE, as well as the 11+ exam, having taken the exam myself for my secondary school. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!

 My Experience:

My journey as a tutor began in 2021, working in particular with students whose education had been heavily affected by the pandemic. In this time I have developed a passion for sharing knowledge, helping students whose shoes I was in just a few years ago. I am also well adapted to tutoring remotely; despite being behind a screen, I always strive to create good personal connections with students, which allows them to get the most out of my teaching.

I always design my lesson plans to be varied; they include teaching syllabus content, to quizzes and other short activities, to essay feedback sessions, to practicing exam questions together- all tailored to each individual student's needs. Communicating with both the student and parents in order to figure out what each child needs is very important to me.

When starting my A levels back in 2018, I was not considering Oxbridge, or even going to university at all. But with persistent encouragement and reassurance from my history teacher, I found the confidence to apply. In essence, self-confidence is the key, and I endeavour to be the kind of tutor who motivates and inspires their students to believe in their abilities. Whilst students will all embark on different paths in their future, all of them share the fact that they need the confidence to find it- this is one of the chief roles of any educator. I want to use tutoring to help each student find their own potential, wherever it may lead them.

I look forward to working with you!

Danny
