English Literature Tutoring (KS3-5) with John

 Lesson Details

I am a recent PhD graduate in English Literature (based at the University of Surrey), offering tutorial opportunities for KS3-5 pupils to learn and improve key skills for analysing literary texts, as well as brushing up on the plots, themes and characters of relevant texts set by corresponding exam boards.

I can offer a personalised and patient approach to tutoring, which accommodates individual learning needs and styles.

I am currently teaching (in-person) in two separate roles:
- Undergraduate Seminar Tutor (September 2020-present), University of Surrey
- Brilliant Club School Placement PhD Tutor (September 2021-present), South-East

I can offer specialised, in-depth tutoring around several GCSE English exam texts, including The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde; Great Expectations; A Christmas Carol; Jane Eyre; Lord of the Flies; Animal Farm; Never Let Me Go; Journey's End; and any of the selected Shakespeare plays.

I can offer the same for selected A-Level texts including Paradise Lost; Birdsong; Regeneration; WW1 Poetry; The Bloody Chamber; The Handmaid's Tale; The Woman in White; Lady Audley's Secret; Hard Times; North & South; Oranges are not the Only Fruit; The Lonely Londoners; The Picture of Dorian Gray; Middlemarch; Heart of Darkness; Wuthering Heights; Tess of the D'Urbervilles; Mrs Dalloway; The Great Gatsby; What Maisie Knew; A Room with a View; A Passage to India; The Go-Between; and Atonement.

- Shakespearean Contexts (KS3)

Across both roles I have undertaken the following work and/or gained the following skills:
- Producing interesting and engaging seminar/classroom activities tailored to individual key stage or year group (including presentation slides and work handouts).
- Facilitating robust and respectful debate and discussion between peers.
- Encouraging students to have confidence in their opinions and to ask probing questions.
- Modelling academic responses to essay-style questions.
- Offering useful book/reading recommendations for further study, related to the relevant subject.
- Marking written work and assessments and providing detailed, qualitative feedback.
- Experience using online teaching software including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Padlet, and Poll-Everywhere.
