Maths with Jake

 Lesson Details

As a mathematically inclined student of psychology, I am experienced not just at applying maths to real world, academic, and unusual situations, but also at explaining mathematical and statistical concepts to my less mathematically inclined peers. In addition, I tutored my own mother when she began attending night school to help her achieve a passing grade.

 My Experience:

I have accrued a variety of tutoring experience having not just helped my own sister throughout her education, but also tutoring my own mother when she started evening classes to get her GCSE maths. In this way I am also experienced in teaching outside my own disciplines, having helped my mother get her early years qualifications so she could teach in a nursery setting.

In sixth form my college's psychology department collapsed, leaving us with unqualified teachers at best, and no teachers at worst. Inadvertently I ended up aiding or outright teaching my peers where the college fell short, as I had already taken it upon myself to teach myself the curriculum in my spare time. Prior to our first exam, two of my classmates handed me a thank you card and told me they would not have bothered showing up to the exam were it not for me. To this day, that card is one of my most prized possessions.

More recently I have taken to aiding family friends and students of my old school in their journeys to get into Oxbridge or other Russell Group universities, offering my tutelage and advice on personal statements, admissions tests, A-Level choices, and other aspects of the admissions process.

 My Qualifications:

Master's: MSc Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology - Distinction
Undergraduate: BA Experimental Psychology - First
A-Levels: A* Psychology, A* Maths, A Biology
AS-Levels & Equivalents: A Further Maths, A Extended Project Qualification, B Creative Writing
GCSEs & Equivalents: 15 A*-A / 9-6

I hold an MSc in Cognitive and Evolutionary Anthropology and a BA in Experimental Psychology, both from the university of Oxford. As such, I am well versed in psychology and biology, as well as maths and the rest of the natural sciences that form the underlying foundations of my degrees and my specialisms within then. The interdisciplinary nature of my degrees put me in a unique position to teach curriculums in the wider context of the world and other surrounding disciplines. Despite having specialisms, I have nonetheless worked to cultivate a broad, jack-of-all-trades knowledge base.

In my undergraduate degree I specialised in metacognition (the way we think about our own thoughts) and computational neuroscience. My knowledge of metacognition means I am well positioned to apply it to the teaching and learning process and research has found that a student's metacognitive ability is capable of predicting exam grades independently of IQ, a measure known to be extensively flawed.

In my master's degree I specialised in the evolution of primate and human tool use, the anthropology of minority groups, particularly studied through a lens of class analysis, and continued my study of metacognition, now from the perspective of cultural evolution. These areas of study built on my existing knowledge base as well as enhancing my knowledge my evolutionary biology and my skills with applied perceptual mathematics.

Both my undergraduate research project and graduate dissertation focused on the study of metacognition, with my dissertation containing explicit sections about how it can be applied to the teaching and learning process. Both can found on my LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/jake-r-j-reeve-712964243/
