 My Experience:

I have been fortunate to work with children and young adults of various ages, ranging from three-year-olds in a pre-school environment to students in Years 4, 5, and 11, as well as currently teaching English as a foreign language in a secondary school in Brussels.
As a volunteer assistant at the pre-school, I took charge of coordinating games and educational activities, helping during mealtimes, and at home time. This position provided me with important experience working with young children in an organised environment. This was quite a different experience from my time looking after my two younger sisters in a much less formal setting. One of the most fulfilling parts of this position was having the privilege of working with a child who had special educational needs. This enabled me to see the world from an alternative viewpoint and to ensure that the child could have the same experiences as their classmates.
My experience working with Year 4 students was yet another extremely enjoyable one. No two days were alike, and the children continually impressed me with their wit and perceptive views of the world. Their strong admiration for the teacher was evident in their work ethic, which made my role even more rewarding. I assisted with a range of responsibilities, such as preparing classroom resources, listening to children read out loud, offering corrections when needed, and overseeing classroom supplies. I also tutored underprivileged students in year 4 and 5 as part of a programme to help them succeed in the 11+ exam.
Additionally, I assisted Year 11 students as a Spanish-speaking helper in the lead-up to their GCSE exams. I led practice speaking sessions and organised group discussions, motivating students to engage in critical thinking and discover alternative methods for tackling questions and discussions when faced with challenges. Seeing their progress was immensely rewarding, and it was gratifying to assist them as they prepared for this significant milestone in their education.
I am currently on my year abroad, working as an English language assistant in a secondary school in Brussels. This is a rather new experience for me as I am now planning lessons and teaching in a much more formal setting, but has offered me the chance to put my skills to the text. I am enjoying it very much and it has solidified my desire to become a teacher after university.
