The tutoring industry has changed enormously since the COVID-19 pandemic. Online learning opened new opportunities for students to access high-quality education regardless of location, while making it easier than ever for talented educators to connect with families around the world.

However, rapid growth has also created challenges.

The relatively low barriers to establishing an online tutoring business have resulted in a significant number of new tutoring agencies and platforms entering the market. What is KCSIE?

Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) is statutory safeguarding guidance issued by the Department for Education for schools, colleges and other organisations within its scope.

It establishes expectations around safeguarding culture, safer recruitment, appropriate checks, responding to concerns and protecting children from harm.

While private tutoring organisations do not necessarily fall within KCSIE’s statutory scope in the same way as schools and colleges, we believe the principles underpinning the guidance provide an important benchmark for responsible tutoring organisations.

Parents should reasonably expect the organisation introducing a tutor to their child to take safeguarding just as seriously as educational institutions do.

The Challenge Facing the Tutoring Sector

Since 2020, the tutoring market has expanded rapidly, particularly online. Unfortunately, establishing a tutoring website or agency does not automatically mean that the organisation behind it has comprehensive safeguarding infrastructure.

There can be substantial differences between providers in how tutors are recruited, vetted, trained and monitored.

A professional tutoring organisation should therefore be able to explain clearly how it approaches safer recruitment, identity and background checks, safeguarding policies, reporting procedures and ongoing compliance.

Safeguarding should never become a box-ticking exercise.
